Halloween Crafts: Ghost Glove Puppet

ghost_hand_puppetHalloween crafts are a fun way to get children involved in the holiday. A ghost glove puppet is an easy Halloween craft to start with. There are a few different ways you can go about making a ghost glove puppet. Here are some of the ideas that I’ve found.

The first way to make a ghost glove puppet is to take a 12 inch square of white fabric or a white handkerchief, three rubber bands, and a black marker. Hold your hand with the three middle fingers together and the little finger and thumb outstretched. Drape the white fabric square over your hand with one of the diagonals running along the top of your fingers. Fix one elastic band over the middle three fingers around your knuckles. This forms the ghost’s head. Fix the second band over your thumb and the third over your little finger. These are the ghost’s arms. Finally, draw a spooky face on your ghost and your ghost glove puppet is ready to start haunting.

My preference is to make a ghost glove puppet out of a paper lunch bag. First, spray paint or color the bag white. The face of the ghost glove puppet will be the bottom of the bag that folds over. Draw a spooky face on this part of the bag. You can then take and shred the bottom of the bag to make creepy tendrils. Place your hand inside the bag and fold your fingers over the bottom to make your ghost come to life!

Once you have made your ghost glove puppet, it can be a fun thing to write some type of script to put on a ghostly play. There are a lot of places online that have puppet plays, but it is much more fun to come up with your own story line with the help of your child or children.

Write the script from the point of view of the ghost. Maybe he’s not like other ghosts and just wants to belong. Remember Casper? Maybe he is a bad ghost who eventually is taught how to turn his life around by his friends. The possibilities are endless.

If you decide to use your ghost glove puppet Halloween craft to put on a puppet show, include a moral. Stories such as these are great ways to teach children about right and wrong. Not only do you introduce them to the world of crafting with the ghost glove puppet, but you are showing them how to be creative with writing a play.
