Witch Halloween Costume – Get Witchy

A witch Halloween costume is one of the classics. The name witch comes from the Saxon term wica, meaning “wise one.” Witches have been connected with Halloween for centuries. Legends tell of witches gathering twice a year when the seasons changed: on the eve of May Day (April 30) and on All Hallows’ Eve (October 31). Witches would gather on these nights, arriving on broomsticks, to celebrate at a party hosted by the devil. Superstitious rumors told of witches casting spells on unsuspecting people, transforming themselves into different forms, and causing other magical mischief.

Three of the most famous witches appear in Shakespeare’s MacBeth — and they can foretell the future. They brew up a potion in a cauldron, adding all kinds of strange ingredients:

“Eye of newt, toe of frog,
Wool of bat and tongue of dog,
Adder’s fork and blind worm’s sting,
Lizard’s leg and howlet’s wing.”

Some other famous witches appear in Victor Fleming’s The Wizard of Oz. Dorothy lives on a farm in Kansas until a cyclone arrives, and picks her, her house, and her dog up and deposits them in the land of Oz. Things in Oz are strange and beautiful, but Dorothy just wants to get back home. She’s helped by the Good Witch of the North, but she’s also in trouble with the Wicked Witch of the West, who seeks revenge for the death of her sister; the Wicked Witch of the East, for which she blames Dorothy.

Much of the common perception of witches today goes back to images created by the church and civil courts to create hysteria and fear. The church tried to eradicate the influence of witches by persecution, torture and murder. To “prove” whether or not someone was a witch, the victim was ducked under water. If she floated, she was called a witch. If she drowned, she was innocent. Either way, she died.

It is estimated that between the 15th and 18th centuries, approximately 2 million people were executed for witchcraft and 80% of them were women. The last person to be executed in Europe for being a witch was Anna Goddi, who was hanged in Switzerland in 1782.

Halloween is the fun time of year to mix a bit of history with modern day fun and dress in witch Halloween costume. You can be wicked, good or sexy with a mix of both. Don’t forget your broom so you can “fly”around. And remember to stir up some potions for good and never evil.
