scarecrow-costumeA scarecrow costume offers a tribute to the season. If you plan on dressing up with a group of family or friends, this fits nicely with the Wizard of Oz theme.  To make a scarecrow costume, you need the following materials:

Materials
  • A long sleeved shirt, preferably white or a solid color, that is too big (to give you room for stuffing).
  • An old or beat up hat with a brim (preferably a straw hat or a “hobo” hat).
  • A burlap, cloth, or paper bag that is just large enough to fit comfortably over your head, neck and upper chest.
  • A bandanna or other scarf.
  • Patch shaped scraps of cloth in different colors and patterns.
  • Straw and/or dried grass and weeds.
  • A belt-length piece of rope.
  • Older pants or blue jeans.

Directions:

1.  Sew the scraps of cloth randomly all over the shirt.

2.  Sew or tape the straw all around the inside of each shirt sleeve cuff, so that the straw juts several inches out of the sleeve.

3.  Slip the bag over the wearer’s head and mark holes to be cut for the eyes, nose and mouth.  Also, mark a jagged neck line that will be low enough to cover the neck area completely after the bag is loosely tied at the neck with a bandanna.

4.  Take off the bag and cut the holes and neck line.  Outline the eye and mouth holes with thick black lines.

5.  Wear the costume with old pants (preferably blue jeans) and old shoes.  Tie the bag loosely at the neck with the bandanna.  Stuff the shirt with paper, a small pillow, or more straw.  Tie the shirt at the waist with the piece of rope.  Color the nose red or black with makeup.
